The Annual Australian Qur’an Competition was set up by a group of young men to give the country a national stage for Quran memorisation and recitation. Participants enter by memorisation level: the whole Quran (30 juz), two-thirds (20 juz) or one-third (10 juz), with the shorter portions taken consecutively from the start or end.

Preliminary recitations are held online, and finalists come together for a national competition day and awards ceremony. Respected shuyukh and qurra’ lead the judging, with Dr Mohammed “Shaykh Abu Omar” Khalissi, who has mastered the ten qira’at, as lead judge.
