Masjid Westall began as an old three-bedroom house at 130 Rosebank Avenue, bought in 1998 by the Indonesian Muslim Community of Victoria (IMCV) with money raised among Indonesian students, residents and the Consulate General in Melbourne. Community volunteers did the renovation work, and the basic building was ready for use by mid-2000.
IMCV itself was founded in 1997 by six pengajian (Islamic study) groups and is now an umbrella for twelve study groups across three community centres. Westall remains a focus for its spiritual and social programs in Melbourne’s south-east.
