Families who arrived from Pakistan and India in the 1960s and 1970s bought the former Uniting Church at 72–74 George Street in 1984, and the United Muslim Migrants Association was formally established a year later. The UMMA Centre is still run as a not-for-profit masjid and community centre.
The five daily prayers and Jumu’ah are held in a musalla with a sisters’ section and wudu facilities. Classes include maktab, Saturday school, hifz and youth halaqat, along with a weekly Qur’an reflection series. The centre also offers shahadah and convert support, nikah, funeral help and pastoral guidance.
