Surau Kita started in 2009 in a small rented house in Coburg, where the Indonesian Muslim Community of Victoria held weekend Fajr prayers, Sunday lectures, Ramadan activities and Qur’an lessons for children. In 2011 the community bought a warehouse in Coburg North with a loan, which was paid off in 2018.

The Dawson Street surau has council approval as a place of assembly. Volunteers run Friday prayers, Qur’an education and memorisation for children, Arabic classes, lectures, Ramadan programs and sport. Space gets tight at busy times such as Ramadan.
