Abdo arrived in Australia from Somalia in 1998 and struggled to find food that tasted like home, so he and his family opened Hamar Weyne for the Somali community in Melbourne’s north. New Somali Kitchen on Racecourse Road is his fresh take on the same traditional dishes.
Expect tender meat cooked in a blend of spices, fragrant rice and a mix of fresh and cooked vegetables. Sweet spiced tea is served, along with sweet and savoury snacks. The food is halal, and the café also caters for parties, functions and events.
