Nelayan’s Hawthorn restaurant is one of three Melbourne venues run by the Nelayan Group, which opened in 1997 and calls itself the city’s oldest Indonesian restaurant. The cooking draws on regions right across the archipelago, from Sumatran rendang to Javanese gado-gado.
It’s at 787 Glenferrie Road, with sister restaurants on Swanston Street and Lonsdale Street in the city.
