Melbourne Grand Mosque grew out of the Werribee Islamic Centre, incorporated in January 2001 as a multi-ethnic Islamic organisation. Its early team bought land in Hoppers Crossing before the Tarneit mosque was built to serve Wyndham’s fast-growing population.
Imam Hysni Merja leads the mosque. Programs include Sunday school, tutoring from primary school to VCE, a weekly Tajweed class for women and school-holiday activities for children. Registered imams conduct both nikah and civil marriages, and the centre provides Islamic burials.
