Akwaaba Restaurant

Akwaaba means “welcome” in Twi, a language of Ghana’s Akan people. The restaurant serves traditional West African and fusion dishes at the beach end of Fitzroy Street, St Kilda.

Waakye, rice and black-eyed beans cooked in sorghum leaves, comes with beef stew, fried fish, boiled egg, gari, spaghetti and shito. Kenkey is served with pepper sauce, crispy anchovies and fried fish, and spiced grilled meats arrive with plantain, salad and flatbread. Many dishes run hot, but milder options and vegetarian and vegan plates are on offer.
